Using a Zoom Room as a Video Recording Studio

Zoom Rooms are used primarily for conferencing. But did you know they can also be used as a small video recording studio? With Zoom, you can record meetings even if you don’t have remote participants (i.e. you’re just recording yourself). Why would you choose to do video recordings in a Zoom Room? It is fast, easy and generally requires no additional equipment.

Some of the types of recordings that you could use a Zoom Room for include:

  • Instructional demonstrations for the creation of online lessons
  • One-on-one video interviews
  • Small focus groups or student presentations

Zoom provides step-by-step instructions for recording in Zoom Rooms. You can record either to the cloud or a local device. If you record to the cloud, first do the following:

  • Go to Zoom.umn.edu, login, and check Settings > Recording Settings
    • Verify that Cloud Recording is enabled
    • Adjust other settings based on your goals for the recording session
  • Note your Meeting ID and Passcode

Once you’re in the meeting, you control when the recording starts and ends, and you can record multiple files tied to a single meeting. See Zoom’s Cloud Recording instructions for more information about finding and sharing your recordings with others.

Note: At the University of Minnesota, cloud recordings do expire after 180 days. For recordings you intend to keep longer than that, download and retain the recordings elsewhere, like Google Drive, Box Secure Storage, or Kaltura Mediaspace.
